Riding on the very distinctive 'Trooper' Daytona 675, Peter Hickman managed to achieve a podium finish in third place at the Isle of Man TT 2017's Supersport Race 1. This is an exceptional achievement considering Triumph aren't producing the machine anymore and have sold off all the racing spares.
The 'Trooper' machine is, of course, receiving a lot of sponsorship from Iron Maiden as well as advertising their Trooper beer and clothing range. The team is run by the successful Smiths Racing of Gloucester who have been involved with Triumph for quite a few years and were running the Triumph Factory team at one point.
The Supersport race itself was delayed in starting due to weather conditions. When it was started, two hours late, it was eventually won by Michael Dunlop with James Hillier getting second. However Peter did manage to get the fastest lap of the race at 126.756 mph. This was a magnificent effort as at one point he was down in sixth place but managed to claw back the deficit and pass William Dunlop to get third place.
It was also good to see Gary Johnson finish in 6th place on his Triumph, and Martin Jessop bring his Triumph home in 12th. Full results here.
The second Supersport race appears to have been cancelled due to weather.
