A new profile has been added to the list of Triumph motorcycle models on this site: The Triumph 5SW (1940). After the losses incurred at Dunkirk the War Office were desperately short of motorcycles. Triumph at the time produced the 3SW 350cc sidevalve for the ministry and as the civilian 5S used virtually all the parts from the 3S it was quickly adapted for military use as the 5SW to boost numbers. It became a very liked bike amongst it's riders as they enjoyed the power of the 500cc engine with the lightness of the 350 frame. The bike was, however, short lived as the factory was destroyed in the Coventry blitz and sidevalve production ceased. When production started again the ohv 3H was adapted for ministry use as the 3HW.
