It wasn't the best kept secret that after the demise of the Thruxton 1200 model range, Triumph were planning to replace it with an easier to manufacture model based on one of their existing models. So, at last, here we have the launch of the Speed Twin 1200 RS to plug that Thruxton gap - and doesn't it look smart.
As might be expected, the base model has undergone some cuts. Out are the Brembo M50s and the Sport rider mode - now you can only get those on the RS model. The RS model also gets an up-down quick-shifter but it is incompatible with the foot-pegs on the base model. The design of both models is now more inspired by the muscle bikes of the 70's - that might not appeal to all but then it may well attract others. All in all a good mix.
Stunning and uncompromising, the all-new Speed Twin 1200 RS signals its sporting intent with its nose-down attitude, top-specification suspension components, beautifully finished in gold and a premium suede material for the seat. The raked fuel tank, with its deep front cutouts, is chiselled and muscular, while the minimal throttle body covers are finished in brushed aluminium and integrated seamlessly into sculpted side panels within the slim rear frame. Underneath, the lean, angular engine casings are powder coated black and framed by an uninterrupted exhaust run flowing into twin upswept ‘megaphone’ silencers.
